Kanban – The Milk Example

There
Photo owned by devriesm (cc)

Think of something at home that you never want to be without. Recently, Paul volunteered that his family never run out of milk. How do they ensure that that happens? They keep 2 x 2 litre containers of milk in the fridge. As soon as one is empty, it is left out and prompts the next person going to the shops to collect a 2-litre container of milk. Simple? They are never without milk.

Oh, by the way, Paul’s family have never heard of kanban.

As with many lean principles, they are derived from simple common sense. A good kanban system ensures continuous supply of material. The word ‘kanban’ means ‘signal’. A kanban signal is a trigger to replenish material.

The most common type of kanban is a 2-bin kanban. 2 bins are used for each item in a storage location. Each container is filled with a quantity to cover usage over a set period of time. One ‘bin’ must be emptied before using the second. The empty bin triggers a signal.

The signal can be the bin itself, a card, a fax etc and should follow a standard process.

Bin sizes are calculated using a combination of the usage, delivery/collection frequency, supply lead time and batch size.

The target in many lean companies is to minimise bin sizes by increasing collection/delivery frequency and reducing batch sizes.

Through the application of kanban, companies can expect to reduce inventories and eliminate downtime due to material shortages.

This is one of the many tools delivered in our FETAC Lean Manufacturing Tools training course helping to minimise waste in participating companies. Click on the link for more information.

NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety

It’s lovely to have a good news story on a Monday. And a very miserable, wet Monday at that.

Congratulations to all our students on their recent excellent results in the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety. Our students achieved a 100% pass rates in two papers and 75% in the third.

The overall pass rate for the three exams internationally averaged 65%.

Our students did really well. Well done to everyone, all the hard work paid off. Well done also to the tutor for this course, Finbarr Stapleton.

NEBOSH, The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health, is an independent examining board and awarding body with charitable status. It offers a comprehensive range of globally-recognised qualifications designed to meet the health, safety, environmental and risk management needs of all places of work in both the private and public sectors.

Here at SQT we offer the two NEBOSH accredited courses in Occupational Health & Safety, namely the

NEBOSH International General Certificate
and the
NEBOSH International Diploma.

Details on both courses are here.

As I said it’s great to have some good news when the national news is of incessant rain and flood damage!

Online Marketing

As readers of this blog know, we provide an array of training courses as shown here.

Last Tuesday we ran an Online Marketing course for Limerick County Enterprise Board. The course was organised by Agnes Relihan and had a full attendance. It was held in the new Office Ireland training room just beside us here in Castletroy, a good venue.

The reason I’m writing a post about this one course, (out of the twenty-one courses being held this week), is that I myself was one of those delegates. This is an area where we still have a lot to learn.

Clare Cunningham was our excellent trainer and there was lively discussion throughout the day. I learned a lot from attending the course.

It concentrated on areas such as:
Basics of good website design
Knowing how people find your website
Search engines
SEO Search Engine Optimisation
Blogging
Google Adwords
Website Analytics
Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Youtube)

Things we have done here at SQT to improve our online marketing include revamping our website to make it more ‘search engine friendly’. Daniel Heffernan re-designed our site and did an excellent job. We added Google Analytics and are finding the package very useful. We are learning more and more about SEO. We started the blog in the summer and we are beginning to find our feet.

Let’s say we are currently at the crawling stage. We intend being a 100 metre sprinter! Watch this space! :)

We really need to improve our use of Twitter though.

To quote an old slogan, (without mentioning source), to describe where our online marketing is at – ‘A lot done, More to do’, except I’d change it to ‘Some done, A lot more to do’.

Come to think of it, I feel the latter slogan would have been better for that political party too!

I’ll keep you posted re our online marketing progress and all suggestion are very, very welcome.

Our next public Online Marketing course is this coming Wednesday, (18th November), in Castleknock Hotel, Dublin.

Health & Safety News

Here at SQT we run a number of Occupational Health & Safety courses accredited by NEBOSH, the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health. NEBOSH is based in Leicester in the UK.

This year NEBOSH is celebrating its 30 year anniversary.

NEBOSH was formed in 1979 as an independent examining board and awarding body with charitable status. It offers a comprehensive range of globally-recognised, vocationally-related qualifications designed to meet the health, safety, environmental and risk management needs of all places of work in both the private and public sectors.

We provide the NEBOSH International Certificate and Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety. Both courses, though demanding, have proven to be very popular here in Ireland. NEBOSH qualifications are recognised by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

According to the NEBOSH website, courses leading to NEBOSH qualifications attract around 30,000 candidates annually and are offered by over 400 course providers in 80 countries around the world.

Being one of their course providers, SQT was invited to their 30 year celebration at the House of Lords this evening. Unfortunately due to work commitments here, we wont be able to attend.

Wishing NEBOSH many more years of successful operation.
